Welcome back to Magic in the Messy Middle. This is part of the Messy Middle Archetype™ Series, six issues, each with a companion podcast episode, walking through one Messy Middle archetype at a time. You don’t need to catch all the others to get something out of this one. We’ve covered the Juggler, Quietly Burning Out, and the Restless Achiever so far; in this issue, we’re looking at the season that hides behind “someday”: the Dreamer.
It didn’t hit me all at once. On the surface, everything looked like it should. I was doing well, being responsible, and staying the course. And for a while, that felt like enough.
But underneath, something started to shift. At first, it was subtle and therefore easy to dismiss and rationalize.
There would be a thought here, a feeling there. This sense that I was meant for something else entirely… even if I couldn’t fully name it yet.
I told myself to stay focused. To keep doing what was working. To not get distracted. That felt like the responsible thing to do. After all, my family was counting on me. We needed the health insurance and a consistent, healthy paycheck. That alone is a tell when the reason to stay begins to become less about the work you’re currently doing.
But the pull didn’t go away. It just got louder. There was something else calling me. Something that felt more aligned, more energizing. More like the direction I was meant to go. And the louder the call got, the less satisfied I was with the path I was currently on.
And what made it complicated was this: answering that call wouldn’t take anything away from what I had built. But ignoring it started to feel like I was holding myself back.
I wasn’t waiting for clarity. I was resisting it.
This is what I call a Dreamer season
It doesn’t always look the way people expect. Nothing is necessarily wrong. You’re doing good work. You’ve made thoughtful choices. From the outside, your path makes sense.
And still, something keeps showing up. An idea. A possibility. A version of your work you haven’t fully explored. You don’t ignore it. You just place it to the side on a shelf because it’s not the right time, because there are real responsibilities in front of you, because staying where you are feels grounded and safe. Someday, when the stars align, you’ll give yourself permission to pursue that dream.
For now, you keep going. But that pull doesn’t go away. It tends to get much stronger over time. That’s what creates the tension. Part of you is curious. And another part wants to stay with what’s responsible. That’s what makes this season so easy to defer.
The someday trap
Here’s what usually keeps the Dreamer stuck longer than she needs to be: someday, one-day thinking. It feels responsible. It feels patient. But all it does is kick the dream down the road.
There’s always a reason. Too many responsibilities. Too many people counting on you. Too much already invested to walk away from now. And sometimes, sharing it with someone else doesn’t help because they project their own fears onto you, and without meaning to, end up reinforcing your decision to stay put.
Underneath all of that is something harder to admit: you’ve been taking care of everyone else, your team, your family, so many people counting on you. And somewhere along the way, you decided, maybe without ever saying it out loud, that your dream mattered less than all the other things you were responsible for.
But as the pull grows stronger, it eventually shows up somewhere you can’t ignore: in your performance. You notice a shift in your energy. In your drive.
The distortion
Here’s what often keeps the Dreamer stuck: the vision feels real, but the next step doesn’t. So you stay where you are not because you don’t want the next thing, but because you can’t yet see how to get there. And instead of exploring, you start to second-guess the pull itself.
A small shift
What if you don’t need the full path to take a step? What if the call you’re feeling is enough to begin paying attention? Not to leap, but to start exploring what’s there?
And what if your dream doesn’t have to compete with everyone else’s needs? What if it’s allowed to coexist, not instead of the people you’re caring for, but alongside them.
If this feels familiar, it may be time to name the season you’re in. You may be in a Dreamer season, and often more than one pattern is at play.
Start here: take the assessment
If you take one thing from this, take the free Messy Middle Archetype Assessment™. It takes about 12 minutes and names what’s actually showing up for you right now. You’ll have the opportunity to schedule time with me if you’d like to explore your results.
